Shombay, a lion portrait by Sandra Cutrer

"Shombay", which in Swahili simply means, "lion". I think the name fits this male lion portrait.  He is painted in thick oils, making visible many strokes and extra paint in various areas, giving him added texture and interest. Painted on a 16" x 20" x 2.5"  thick 3-D edge, professional stretched canvas. Please scroll through my listings for a price on all of my works for sell.

References were taken from my own collection of photos.

I have immensely enjoyed taking my cameras to the many zoos my husband and I have visited over the years throughout the USA. Although my dream is to visit Africa and take photos of these big cats in the wild, I still find it interesting to watch them in the zoos secure and safe enclosures. Sadly, so many of the wild cats are no longer in existence, or they are so few in number in the wild because of poachers, guided hunts, or exposed to poisons, at least they are safe in these homes surrounded by those who care a great deal about their future. Hopefully, one day sooner than later, they will have larger areas to roam, more secure and natural reserves, and live as free as they possibly can from the dangers man has bestowed upon them.

The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1.

Cee-Cee,a small clown portrait by Sandra Cutrer

SOLD!!! Cee-Cee,a small clown portrait on a wrapped canvas (all sides painted a dark hue), no need to frame.
I am really having a blast painting the faces of clowns these last few weeks. What fun to see their faces emerge, along with their fun personalities, and eyes that speak volumes to me. As a portrait painter of humans and animals, I strive to make the eyes tell their story. We are all individuals, all have a story to tell, whether we can share it or not, it is there, always a part of who we are. Animals especially can not speak to us with words, but they can speak through their actions and eyes. Clowns remind me of this fact. They, as "entertainers, wear goofy make-up and wild clothing, large accessories, funny wigs, and a painted- on extra-big smile. They don't have to speak to us with a language of words, but we watch their antics, their motions, and some of us even watch their eyes. They tell us a story if we watch close enough. We laugh, we cry, and sometimes we feel exactly what they are presenting to us.

Remember, we never know who we might meet in a public place, whose faces are "painted-on", but their hearts are crying, and their eyes may be pleading. If we can get our attention off of ourselves for a few moments each day, and reach out to others, we would live in a better world. A world that seems to have lost so much of its past love for mankind, and now focuses so much on their new toys, like texting, phone games, and what we can buy tomorrow to out-do our BFF.

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” (NIV) 1 John 3:17-18

Sweet Potato, the Party Clown in oils on small canvas

"Sweet Potato, the Party Clown, is part of my clown series, painted on 6" x 6" x 1.5" wrapped canvas. All sides are painted a dark hue, so there is no need to frame them.I am offering a discount if you are interested in purchasing more than one clown ( or more than one painting), or I would love for you to commission me to paint a specific paintng for you. Please contact me on my blog, or on my web site at: sandracutrer.com

I adore watching clowns of all kinds, especially those whose focus is to bring cheer to children. Most clowns seem to be so patient and kind. It takes a special person to do this genre of work day in and day out! I think it is a special talent from God, and a blessing for both sides. I know there are many clowns out there who visit places like St Jude's and Texas Children's Hospital, not to mention many other hospitals for cancer, burn patients, and terminal diseases. What an awesome thing for those children to see these funny faces trying to take a little pain from their bodies and souls, and replace that with a smile on their tiny faces- even for a few moments!

Thank you for reading my blog and looking at my art work. Please contact with any questions. I offer an easy lay-away-plan for all budgets, and I love taking commissions for any budget!

*** Sweet Potato is SOLD, but I would love to create a custom piece just for you!

You Don't Know Me, a clown portait in oils by Sandra Cutrer

You Don't Know Me", a female clown portrait. Clowns have always fascinated me. I have even played a clown on several occasions for my church and Sunday School classes years ago. What fun it was to "hide" my identity behind all the thick and colorful make-up! Most people knew who I was right away, but some were totally surprised, much to my glee! There is a funny, and very kind, clown that comes to one of our local restaurants on Saturday mornings. He seems to have the patience of Job as the kids crowd around him, waiting for their twisted and funny-shaped balloons. Some clowns seem happy, some sad. I think the eyes tell us most of the story. Many times, behind the make-up, you can still read the heart. $50.00 plus $7.00 shipping, delivery confirmation, and insurance.
