"Akechita", Portrait of a Warrior, a Work in progress by Sandra Reeves Cutrer

Although it has been several weeks since I worked in my studio, as I recover from major (and have I mentioned super painful) surgery, my heart is out in my studio, while my body seems to be slow in recovering. As I turned the page on my daily prayer and scripture calender this morning, I recalled some of the times in my past when I thought I didn't need anyone in my life, as I seemed to only be able to depend on myself at times to get things done. I am totally an "A" personality, and very determined to do things "right" (which really boils down to doing it my way) or die! Well, God can put us on our backs very quickly to remind us, in his loving, patient way of course, that we are not self- sufficient. We must depend on him, and look for his guidance, everyday. When we don't, we are showing our haughty pride and  need to soar in self-sufficiency. God's word tells us that he hates a haughty look, among many other things. Ouch. Pride and self-sufficiency is not only unhealthy, but nothing near to why God created us to begin with. We need God. We need that connection that prayer brings us with him, and others- like family, our spouse, our friends, or neighbors.We should care and be cared for. There is no room in a Christian life for haughty pride and too much self dependence. As our example, Jesus,God in the flesh, showed us that we need him, and we must show love and be loved.

Proverbs 29:23 A man's pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.

I thought I would go to my patio/outdoor studio for the last couple of days, to allow my brush and acrylics "talk to me". I had a blast painting this piece- looser than most of my work. I really enjoy how quickly acrylics dry, which makes it a different challenge than oils. You must work faster and concentrate more on where you want your colors to go since they will stay there,not like oils that can be easily pushed around on your canvas for days. Like their distant cousins the Iroquois, the Cherokee Indians had an even division of power between men and women. Cherokee men were in charge of hunting, war, and diplomacy. Cherokee women were in charge of farming, property, and family. Men made political decisions for the tribe, and women made social decisions for the clans. Chiefs were men, and landowners were women. Both genders took part in storytelling, artwork and music, and traditional medicine. Today,Cherokee women can be chiefs also.

Although this one was accidentally destroyed (long story), I thought I would share with you my lay-in and the 'almost' finished painting. After all of the work, the painting was destroyed.Accidents do happen, and people make mistakes that we must forgive them for. Thank the Lord that he is a forgiving God. I have made so many mistakes in my life, have many regrets,especially the things I have done over the years to hurt others. God loves us and forgives us, and he puts it under the blood of Jesus Chrsit, who knew no sin. When we repent, God forgives. End of story. He doesn't "bring it up" to our face like others may have the urge or tendency to do. The Apostle Paul said,"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 3:13-14).

"Calling It a Day" by Sandra Reeves Cutrer

 While walking on our beach jetty, i was blessed to catch this elderly gentleman on his way home. The jetty, made of concrete and beautiful slabs of granite, is usually full of fishing men and women from day break until late into the night. Many come with their portable A/C's in the summer, and heater's or Coleman stoves in the winter, to catch fish. There are always a host of nationalities represented here, and they all seem to get along great,sharing such a tight space. Many of us could use this example in our daily lives. How often people pull away from those "not like themselves" because of fear, or cultural differences, when we are all people made by one Father.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. We know we love God's children if we love God and obey his commandments.

Chief Wannabee SOLD!

Chief Wannabee was painted from one of my many photos. This child, who happens to be my son, loved to dress up in his American Indian-style headdress and clothing that I had made for him. According to my parents, both sides of our family are descended from the Choctaw and Cherokee tribes of what is now the state of Mississippi.

Hats off to a great,warm Monday

Good morning! The weather in Lake Jackson will be in the mid seventies for this last day of January, but (according to my favorite meteorologist) by Friday snow is predicted! I am thinking this can only happen in the deep south.

We had traveled back home to Louisiana for our first Christmas after moving here to Texas. A new friend of ours called on Christmas day to say that it was snowing, about a foot deep, which was a big deal here in the deep south. We finished up our Christmas with family, grabbed our two granddaughters who would be staying with us for a week, and headed back to TX that night.We arrived at 1:30 AM. It was beautiful!The girls and I ran all over our front yard, playing,throwing snowballs and making snow angels, while my husband tried to quiet us a bit to keep our exuberance from waking the neighbors!The next Christmas Pop and Nana were not thinking about the snow from the year before, but it brought sad faces to our girls when we drove up.They looked out the window and asked us," Where is the snow?", thinking it snowed here for Christmas every year!
