"Big Red" a Texas Longhorn in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

 update- SOLD!

A few changes made here and there, and "Big Red" is finished! I hope you enjoyed the last post where I showed the steps in creating "Big Red"!

This big guy actually lives down the road from our home, on the way to our local beach. He was timid when I went the first few times to get a few photo shots of him and his family and peers, but on the last trip his curiosity got the best of him and he had to come check me out- or check out my camera anyway. I talked to him in my sweetest Texan-southern-country voice ( the one I use for scared kitties and puppies). He seemed to be at ease until I would take a few steps closer, making him take a few steps back. I forgot the bucket of feed, but I really must try that next time. After all, there is a huge gate and fence between the two of us. We should both be safe! LOL! I am only 5"0" tall, so I don't think he has a thing to worry about.

Some new works going on in my studio- unfinished longhorn by Sandra R Cutrer

Here is the lay-in and a few layers of paint added to my newest work, a Texas Longhorn. Working in oils on a stretched canvas.

We have so many Texas longhorns around where we live, but who would have thought they would be so timid! They run when I get out of the car with my camera.

There are so many colors, so many markings, and no two come close to being alike. How can you not respect these beautiful -and huge- animals.

 

 I wouldn't dare climb across a fence or gate, as I am sure they aren't as gentle as they seem. Maybe next time I can grab a bucket of feed and see if I can entice one or two to come a little closer to my camera.

"A Lot of Bull", a long horned Watusi in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

What a hot day. This August heat is tough on everyone- humans and animals alike! This big guy should be headed to the nearest water trough or pond!

I was pleased to get a nice email about my "A Lot of Bull" longhorn painting. I have pasted the story, and hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!

"The Watusi is an amazing animal. We have had our bull for about 10 years. He had his horns tipped and is the only breed we know of that sharpened them back up. He is very protective of his new lady love, a red Watusi heifer. He is amazing, when I fed them cubes he waited until she came up to the trough to start eating. A gentleman, lol. Our neighbor likes it when he bellers..he sounds like a male elk."

Tatanka, a Bison Portrait in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

Tatanka, means Bison in the Native American Indian language. 
This big guy seems to be standing his ground, maybe chasing away rival males from his harem. My husband, younger son, and I traveled to the Midwestern states a few years back. A bison similar to this one decided to run a little on the main road- in the state park traffic. Thankfully, everyone knew to stop driving until he made up his mind where he wanted to go!

Tatanka is painted on an 8" x 8" x 0.50" stretched canvas, with all sides painted in a dark hue- making it easy to hang him unframed, or placed in your favorite frame.Prices are listed on my photo listing- on this blog or please visit my website @ sandracutrer.com for more information.

"Rosie Bell", a horned cow painting by Sandra R Cutrer

SOLD! "Rosie Bell" is a palette knife painting. I used thick oil paint on a 6" x 6" x 1.5" stretched-wrapped canvas (all sides will be painted a dark hue).

My mom and dad had a little over eight acres years ago, and tried their hand at raising cows. It was fun for awhile, feeding the calves large bottles of milk, and watching them grow. One of my mother's favorite cows was named Rosie. My mom liked Rosie, but Rosie liked to play rough, and "bump" mom, or anyone who came in the field. We knew she was only playing, but she was too big to play so rough, not knowing she far out-weighed any of us!

In memory of Rosie, Bell, Hondo, Billy Boy,Rusty, and all of those other over-grown calves who enjoyed play time.

Texas Longhorn by Sandra Reeves Cutrer

UNFINISHED!  Texas Longhorn bull  painted in oils on a 24" x 30" x 1.25" gallery wrapped canvas. All sides will be painted a dark hue, so this big guy can easily be hung unframed. I still have work to do, but I thought I would post the process.

No one can live in Texas without noticing fields or pastures that are dotted with these big bulls, and their cows. Their extra long and curvy horns are beautiful,but they are a bold statement for uninvited trespassers!

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.  1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV

Continuing the Texas Longhorn Bull lay-in by Sandra Reeves Cutrer

 Continuing the lay-in for my large oil painting of my big Texas Longhorn bull. What a big guy. What a lot of paint! What fun!
My husband is carefully watching the progress of this one, as I think he has his eye on it for his office at work. Hmm. We shall see.

I think about the animals, and how time means nothing to them. They live for the moment. In total innocence. In so many ways I wish we humans could live our lives like that. Instead, we know too much, and will be accountable for how we live. I listen to music when I paint, and the song ,"Live Like You Were Dying" was just on my CD player. How would I change today if I knew I were dying? Such a strange thought, but we are all dying- everyday! We can never re-live today, yesterday, or 30 seconds ago. Every day is a gift- a present from God. Oh, how we should indeed live like we are dying, and live like we are accountable for each day- because we truly are!

You`re blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God. You`re blessed when you follow his directions, Doing your best to find him. That`s right- you don`t go off on your own; you walk straight along the road he set. Psalm 119:4

Starting the lay- in for a Texas Longhorn by Sandra Reeves Cutrer

This is the start of my newest painting, a Texas Longhorn bull. I'm painting him in oils on a large  gallery wrapped canvas.All the thick sides will be painted a dark hue, so there is no need to frame- just hang him in your favorite room!

I got carried away working and didn't take a photo of the bull drawn into the brown before I started putting in another layer of background and a little detail color.

It never ceases to amaze me as I "birth"a painting! I used to be paranoid if anyone tried to look at my work before it was finished. I think with time and experience that fear has left- well, mostly. If I am drawing something and I'm not happy with the drawing , then I don't really care for on-lookers. Oil paints are so forgiving and easily manipulated. I' m hoping you won't be disappointed with the final painting- I don't think you will!

Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man's nostrils, and the man became a living person.

It was such a neat experience to watch his huge, muscular beauty,enjoying his freedom to roam.We were also able to see the female (cows) with their babies, although they stayed further away, protecting their young from curious tourist.
