Nebit, a variant of the Egyptian word for leopard. A close-up and personal portrait of one of the most powerful wild cats. Leopards are loners, not belonging to a pride, pack, or family of its own kind. I think it is amazing that these cats can carry their prey- three times heavier than themselves- up a tree so others, like lions and hyenas don't steal it from them!

Nebit- Leopard UNFINISHED by Sandra Reeves Cutrer

Nebit
  Variant of Egyptian Nebibit, meaning leopard.

Still on my easel and very wet, but a good friend and I are on our way to another animal photo shoot for new reference materials,so I will have to finish him later.

Leopards, graceful and powerful large cats closely related to lions, tigers, and jaguars. They live in sub-Saharan Africa, northeast Africa, Central Asia, India, and China. Many of their populations are endangered, especially outside of Africa. Another species we must protect for future generations!

Wild and Free- unfinished- part 2 by Sandra R Cutrer

For the last few days, I've worked on "Wild and Free", along with a few other paintings. Here in south Texas, we have really enjoyed some really beautiful spring-like January days- the best days to paint in my studio with such great light. I do love watching this big guy come-to-life right in front of me- what fun! While painting him I imagine myself watching this beautiful animal running wild and free. Maybe it's a she, and she has a family back in the jungle, waiting for her to hunt for prey, and get back quickly to feed their hungry bellies. Maybe it's a he, and he is just roaming around, looking for some action!

All of God's creatures are so amazing and interesting to me. I love watching the Nat Geo Wild shows on TV, along with travel channels,too. There is so much to learn. I can hardly stand to become tired at the end of each day, knowing that I have to wind down and get my rest. I'd rather my body be young (again), needing less sleep, so I can pack in a few more hours of learning (and painting) each and every day. I'd love to have the energy I had when I was in my early twenties, but know what I know now in my mid fifties!

     Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23

Wild and Free - Tiger painting in oils- unfinished!

Sometimes I forget how really "weird" my under paintings, or lay-ins, really look! Here are 3 photos of my "Wild and Free" tiger painting ( I hope to finish tomorrow). If you aren't an artist, it may seem sort of strange to have so many colors on a canvas that you won't really "see" later.  I didn't take a photo of the first stage, but it was filled with blues and purples. There are so many layers in many of my paintings, taking lots of time to slowly build up to the desired colors. And,the drawing evolves, too.So, don't worry, it will all work out, slowly coming together. I love painting. I love being in my studio. I like cooking, keeping a clean house, and yard work. I don't really care for grocery shopping, or paying bills, but these are things that I have to do. It is sometimes so hard to not paint, when other things must get done. But, as soon as I can, I head for my studio, turn on (and turn up) my music, and enter into that "other world", the world of creating fine arts- what a blessing it is to (finally) be able to do what I love!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God ... John 1:1-2.

"Tiger in the Grass" was painted in oils on a 12"x12"x1.5" gallery wrapped stretched canvas(painted on all sides) with palette knives.


This painting brings back sweet memories from a very long time ago.My only daughter, Michelle, who has since passed away from ovarian cancer, loved her Little Golden Books while growing up.One was called,"Charlie in the Grass". Charlie was a cute yellow kitten who struck out on his own, meeting his neighbors of birds, squirrels, rabbits, and such.At her request, I read the book so many times that Michelle finally memorized every word on each of the pages. At around 3 years old she would "read" it to me. How I miss those happy days! But, life goes on, faster and faster, I think. But, there is hope for another life, where we shall all be changed!

For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! II Corinthians 4:17.
