Sport,a Chion pet portrait in oils by Sandra Cutrer

"Sport" is a Chion- part long-haired Chihuahua and part Papillion.

I started with my drawing. Everything looked good except for the mouth area, which I corrected before adding any paint. Then I added the first layer of my darkest-darks and background colors. The ears have lots of reds and orange hues since the sun light was actually in Sport's face. The photo I worked from shaded the eyes way too much, so I used my Photoshop to lighten the eyes so I could see both enough to paint them, yet not over-lighten them. Once I have my darkest-darks in, and my drawing is good, I start adding the next layers, building up the fur, adding highlights to the grasses in the background, then finally adding the hairs in and around Sport's beautiful ears.
I really enjoyed the challenge of painting Sport, as I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him. The owner is pleased and she thinks I captured his lively and sweet spirit. Of course, that makes me happy, and super pleased!

Tells a Story, Native American Indian by Sandra R Cutrer

"Tells a Story" is a pencil and pastel work on an 8" x 10" piece of tan Strathmore paper. The Native American Indian is dressed in his regal full headdress, wearing a look that speaks to me of a time when the young joyfully would listen and learn.

There are probably many "older folks" out there tonight who have stories to tell, but can't seem to find  anyone who will take time out of their busy lives to listen. They have lived and experienced so many things in their long lives. Their wisdom could save us all a lot of heart aches and troubles- if we would only listen. Many countries and cultures still show full respect and patience for their elders.
In this busier-than-ever time of year, stop and take a few minutes out of your day to make a telephone call to someone you consider "old", but wise. Give out a hug or two, and lend an ear for a few moments to an older neighbor, maybe someone who will spend this holiday season all alone. Listen once  more to that story that you might have already heard a dozen times. Maybe, just maybe, this will be one of your favorite highlights during this special holiday. After all, it  really is all about love.

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Philippians 2:3

Merry Christmas,

Christmas in the South

This afternoon, my husband and I took a walk around our neighborhood. Leaves were still falling while some people were out decorating their front yard with colored lights and wooden Santa's. Others were washing their cars, mowing their grass, and raking up leaves mixed with now-rotted pecans the squirrels had refused to eat or store away. I mean, heck, they don't need many considering it was 80 degrees and already the second day in December! They've already stored-up the warm tree-trunk holes, but continue to lay out on the limbs to stay cool.
We were both born in south Louisiana, lived there for many years, and moved eight years ago to southeast Texas, yet we are still amazed every year around this time when we are running our A/C's full blast while playing Christmas music on our CD player! I mean, who can bake cookies and feel like singing,"White Christmas" when it is probably 100 degrees (or more) in the kitchen?
Okay, so we aren't freezing like the elves on the North Pole, or blowing away snow drifts ten feet high from our front door. And we are less than ten minutes from our local beach. Many would trade places with us, especially when we get to keep our power on all "winter" since the possibility of an ice storm is near zero.
It could be that we're really blessed to live in the south. Our sandy beach still looks inviting, rather like a sort of "warm" snow don't you think? Horses and Horseback riders are enjoying the sun and breezes are welcome since they aren't freezing our noses off.
"Yep", as we say sometimes in the south, "maybe everything ain't so bad after all."

Blue Boy, a feral kitten in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

Blue Boy is a Russian Blue feral kitten that seemed to get stuck in a small tree near my yard. I ran inside, grabbed my camera (for reference photos) and pulled a ladder out of my garage to get this shot. After several great shots, he flew out of the tree like a flash. I left out food, but he never returned. I've painted him in quality oils on an 8" x 10" professional artist board, ready for your favorite frame! Please scroll down to my listing for more of my work. I love taking commissions, especially for animal portraits. You may contact me at: sandrasart777@aol.com for questions or comments. Thanks for looking at my work and reading my blog.

Portrait painting commission I am working on

The drawing is done and I have added a couple of layers of paint- lots more work to do, though! This portrait is for a lovely young lady (a gift from her loving Mom) who misses her dad. He passed away from cancer- not my favorite word to hear. Many of you know that I lost my only daughter to ovarian cancer. Sadly, dad very recently passed from cancer. My prayers are continually toward a quick discovery of all cancers! My husband and I support Saint Jude and The Ovarian Cancer Research Center.

I hope you will come back and see my progress with this piece. I am working on several pieces and hope to finish several before the holidays are upon me! Wow, time really does fly. It seems like only a month or two has passed since I took down my Christmas decorations from last year!!!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving and thanks for looking at my blog.

Sounds of Paris a city steet scene in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

"Sounds of Paris"

I used one of many photos that I took while in Paris a few years back. My older son and I had a wonderful week running around this glorious city, and I am missing it and wishing I were back there. The sights, the smells, the beautiful museums and so many wonderful people, tons of things to do...

We recently had a death in the family, so I haven't been at my easel for the last week or so.
A death makes me think about life even more than I normally do, and what is truly important. Our lives are so fleeting, so short, "like smoke through a keyhole" or "like a vapor".
Enjoy the people around you, love those you love a little bit harder, and be thankful for the gift of life.

Blessings,
Sandra Reeves Cutrer

Blue Russian feral kitten by Sandra R Cutrer

On the easel (wet oils and unfinished) is a Blue Russian (feral) kitten. Sometimes the Blue Russian is called "Archangel Blues". She seemed to be stuck up a tree in my yard, so I ran and grabbed my camera for some photo references. She allowed me to not only snap a few photos while I stood under the tree, but I went back for a small ladder and snapped several more from that view point. She quickly had enough, and wasn't stuck as I supposed, but in an instant she was on the ground running. I went back for food, leaving it on top of our backyard A/C unit, but she never returned. I hoped to capture her beauty and inquisitive nature in this oil painting on a smooth 8" x 10" professional art board.
Thanks for looking at my newest work. I hope to post the finished piece soon. In the mean time, feel free to scroll down for a look at some of my other works for sell. I love taking commissions and offer a layaway plan for every budget, if needed. Please contact me with any questions or comments.

Two Green Apples a still life painting in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

"Two Green Apples" is a still life oil painting, done with thick impasto style strokes.
Painted on an 8"x 8"x 0.50" wrapped canvas. All sides are painted a dark hue, so no need to frame.

The back ground colors are a deep mix of blues, reds, and yellows (creating a deep purple tone), adding harmony to the two bright green apples.
I have been busy painting a few portraits- which are very tightly done in realistic style, so I usually go "lose and free" after the tension of painting portraits! I love the lose strokes here, and the heavy paint. The bright green apples just make me happy every time I look at them!

Lay-in stages and final portrait painting of baby Jonathon by Sandra R Cutrer

Here is the drawing.I have painted in a dark mix of red and blue for the back ground. It will change as I paint more onto the canvas.
Here I am starting to lay in some of the cool and warm colors on the face and in the hair. A lot of blue/red mix goes into the shaded areas of the hair.
I have covered the face, back ground, and put a shade of color on his shirt. Nothing is left unpainted on the canvas at this stage.
Here I am starting to move the colors around, smoothing the skin colrs, but making sure shaded areas stand out. I have worked more on the shirt.
This is the finished painting of my son, Jonathon. He was one and a half years old at the time the photograph was taken, back in 1979. The reference photo was faded, being that old, so I had to put color into the face that reflected back ground colors I chose and colors from the shirt and his hair.

I hope you've enjoyed this!

Chief Wannabee #2- completed painting by Sandra R Cutrer

"Chief Wannbee", #2 completed. Going to a private collector.

This cute little wanna-be-chief  is showing his most "fierce" warrior face! Painted in oils on a 6" x 6" x 1.5" wrapped canvas.

This painting really flowed and made me only wish every painting could go so well!
I hope you enjoyed the stages of my painting. Hang around, as I am working on another little boy's portrait, and will be posting the stages soon.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Creating Chief Wannabee #2 by Sandra R Cutrer

I sold Chief Wannabee #1, so I thought I would paint him again, since he is such a cutie! You can see the photo reference in the first shot, left, below the painting.

Sometimes when I start a painting, I can tell it is going to be "tough"- meaning it is not flowing correctly right at the beginning (or how I'd like it to flow), and then there are times like this when it all starts flowing so smoothly, I am actually wondering who in the world is holding my brush! It was going so well that I did not stop to hunt for my camera to take a shot or two of my beginning sketch. I finally had to stop myself and get that camera, as I had a feeling it was going to be a "Happy Painting!" Oils on a 6" x 6" x 1.5" wrapped canvas.

I allowed it to dry some today (yeah, it was hard not to go in and work on it some more), but I don't want to make mud of my colors. A tweak here and there, and I should be finished tomorrow.
I hope you enjoyed looking as much as I enjoyed painting this little boy.

Feed Store Bitties, two baby chicks by Sandra R Cutrer

"Feed Store Bitties", two darling yellow chicks painted in oils on a 6" x 6" x 1.5" stretched canvas, all sides painted a dark hue so no need to frame! Prices are listed on my photo listing.

These little fuzzy babies bring back such awesome memories for me. One of my grandmothers used to live across the street from a small neighborhood feed store. During nearly every visit, my brothers and I would hurry to get there and see the newest baby chicks in their stacked wire cages. I can still smell the feed in that little store, and recall, when our Dad would come over with us, the manager would allow us to hold the babies. They were so tiny and soft, and I wanted to take them all home.

Naja, an original lion portrait in bright oils

Naja, means strong in the African language. I think that is the perfect name for this strong big cat, and the bold colored oils that I used to create him with!

Naja is painted on an 8" x 10" stretched canvas. The sides are painted the background color, so he can be left unframed or easily added to your favorite frame.

I love lions and continue to be saddened that there are so few remaining in the wilds of Africa. All of the big cats are slowly being killed off, as well as many other species of wild animals all over the world. I hope to continue painting these beautiful creatures, and visit them in their natural habitat one of these days, soon, before they are all gone!

"Big Red" a Texas Longhorn in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

 update- SOLD!

A few changes made here and there, and "Big Red" is finished! I hope you enjoyed the last post where I showed the steps in creating "Big Red"!

This big guy actually lives down the road from our home, on the way to our local beach. He was timid when I went the first few times to get a few photo shots of him and his family and peers, but on the last trip his curiosity got the best of him and he had to come check me out- or check out my camera anyway. I talked to him in my sweetest Texan-southern-country voice ( the one I use for scared kitties and puppies). He seemed to be at ease until I would take a few steps closer, making him take a few steps back. I forgot the bucket of feed, but I really must try that next time. After all, there is a huge gate and fence between the two of us. We should both be safe! LOL! I am only 5"0" tall, so I don't think he has a thing to worry about.

Please scroll down for more of my work for sell and prices.

Some new works going on in my studio- unfinished longhorn by Sandra R Cutrer

Here is the lay-in and a few layers of paint added to my newest work, a Texas Longhorn. Working in oils on a stretched canvas.
We have so many Texas longhorns around where we live, but who would have thought they would be so timid! They run when I get out of the car with my camera.
There are so many colors, so many markings, and no two come close to being alike. How can you not respect these beautiful -and huge- animals.

I wouldn't dare climb across a fence or gate, as I am sure they aren't as gentle as they seem. Maybe next time I can grab a bucket of feed and see if I can entice one or two to come a little closer to my camera.

Savanna Overlook, a rhino painting in stages by Sandra R Cutrer

This is a commissioned work, but I thought you would enjoy the process- from a quick sketch to the finished product. Of course there were several more stages with small changes, then a few corrections here and there, but mainly it went very smoothly.
I told my client that I never thought I would "fall in love with rhinos", but I sure did while painting this. There is something about really- I mean really- looking at an animal, or in this case, the adult female and her calf.
My intentions were to paint it with thicker paint strokes, but as I went, I developed a passion to see these guys more realistic, but still maintain a painterly style.
I hope you will enjoy my work. Thank you for reading my blog and especially joining as a follower!

"Southern Gentleman" Rooster in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

"Southern Gentleman" is an original work, painted in many layers of thick buttery oils, on a large 24"x 30" x1.5" stretched canvas. All sides are painted a dark hue, so no need to frame!
So many rich warm colors makes this rooster a winner for any decor. I named him,"Southern Gentleman" because he seems to be taking a gentleman's bow. In so doing, he certainly has to be a southern born and bred rooster...besides being photographed in South Carolina, then painted in Texas by a true Louisiana girl! It was a such fun creating this painting. I had the canvas layered and drying for weeks, waiting for the perfect object that would work well on top of these colors and thick texture. I think it works well, and shows off the beauty of the rooster.

OOPS! You just missed purchasing "Southern Gentleman", as he recently SOLD! But, I would love to paint one similar just for you! Please contact me for more information.

"Cinnamon and Sugar" two giraffes in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

"Cinnamon and Sugar" are two sweet giraffes. As you can tell, Sugar is trying to catch up with his mother. Giraffes are such amazing animals.I admit it, I envy them for their height and grace.
Unfortunately, more than half the giraffe calves in the wild never become adults as they fall prey to predators like large cats. A fun fact about giraffes is they sleep for between 20 minutes to 2 hours a day. Even when they sleep for the longer period, they do so in 20-minute naps!

Painted in oils on an 8" x 16" x 0.50" wrapped canvas. All sides are painted, making it easy to leave  unframed- or frame it in your own favorite frame. All prices are listed on this blog's price listing, or please  visit my website @ sandracutrer.com, or contact me at: sandrasart777@aol.com for any questions concerning this painting, or questions about other pieces of my work. New Stuff in the making by Sandra R Cutrer

Yes, I am working. I just have a lot of extra pots in the fire lately.
I decided to get back into my drawing, so I have been busy setting up a small "studio" area in my computer/office room-separate from my painting studio. I can't look at my drawing without wanting to work on it, nor can I look at my painting without wanting to work on it. This meant I had no choice but to separate the two! I love drawing. I love painting. But, as I wrote, lots of stuff going on  all the time. I am not a fast painter anyway, so when "life" gets in the way, life must be tended to before my love of art. I plan to take more photos- as neither work is finished. It helps me to post in stages, and I hope my viewers enjoy it,too!

Methai and Baylor, elephants in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

Methai and Baylor, two Asian Elephants at the Houston Zoo in Texas, enjoying a cool drink of water from their new pond. Mother and son are painted on a gallery wrapped stretched canvas, size 12" x 12" x 1". All sides will be painted a dark hue, so it can hang in your favorite room unframed or framed. Please scroll through my works to see all prices.

According to the Houston Zoo Elephant web site, "Asian elephants are the second largest land mammal in the world and one of the most intelligent animals on earth. Unfortunately, it is also one of the world’s most endangered species." This is so sad. I am thankful that there are devoted people, agencies, and zoos ( among other places) that are concerned and taking great steps to insure our future generations enjoy these magnificent Asian elephants!

Abstract oils on canvas by Sandra R Cutrer

Abstract in oils by Sandra R. Cutrer.
Painted  with thick oils on a stretched wrapped canvas-12" x 12" x 1.5"- all sides painted a dark hue. This painting was super therapeutic for me. When you have a lot going on, as in a ton of unwanted stuff on your plate- things unexpected, some times heart-breaking, and there seems to be no way to unburden yourself, "Pray for God's perfect peace, then paint" is my motto! I have sold several abstract paintings. I don't know if the people who buy them can see the heavy emotions that I put into them, or they see their own emotions and a story, but either way it makes me happy that I paint.

All of my prices are listed on this blog's photo listing, or please visit my website @ sandracutrer.com

"Rocky Mountain Warrior", a ram portrait in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

"Rocky Mountain Warrior" is an original oil portrait of a large ram. I have painted in as much detail as possible to convey the rough texture of his thick coarse fur. These big guys are fighters, using their horns against other males to fight for leadership among the easy going female sheep. Built for climbing and cold weather, the ram is a beautiful example of God's many creatures who are to be respected and taken care of for our future generations. Painted in oils on a professional art board, ready for your favorite frame. Prices are listed on the main art work viewing.

"When the Trumpets Sound" three young elephants in oils

"When the Trumpets Sound" is an original oil painting of three young elephants showing off their trumpeting after coming in from a long day of play, and practicing the lessons their mother's taught them about being elephants! I love elephants, finding them amazing animals, super smart, and very loving- if not provoked. They are fun to photograph and paint, and even greater fun to watch.

"A Lot of Bull", a long horned Watusi in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

What a hot day. This August heat is tough on everyone- humans and animals alike! This big guy should be headed to the nearest water trough or pond!

I was pleased to get a nice email about my "A Lot of Bull" longhorn painting. I have pasted the story, and hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!

"The Watusi is an amazing animal. We have had our bull for about 10 years. He had his horns tipped and is the only breed we know of that sharpened them back up. He is very protective of his new lady love, a red Watusi heifer. He is amazing, when I fed them cubes he waited until she came up to the trough to start eating. A gentleman, lol. Our neighbor likes it when he bellers..he sounds like a male elk."
Thanks for the story,Kathy!

A Lot of Bull is painted in oils on a 24"x30"x1.5" wrap around canvas ( all sides are painted), so no need for framing. $225.00 plus shipping.

Fruit of the Vine, a still life in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

"Fruit of the Vine", a still life painted in oils on a  24" x 30" 1.5" stretched wrapped canvas- all sides painted, I could use a glass of that wine about now...

So, I haven't blogged in 5 days. :(  It took me two days just to re-design my blog, and work on some other art business that I needed to catch up on. I don't know who stated that technology makes everything so much faster! I find technology great for some things, but the more there is, the more it eats up my time!!! Whatever happened to quiet days in the studio... LOL. I find myself rushing to the studio, spending less time there than I do on my computer... but, I know I am hooked and I can't live without my P.C., cell phone, face book, websites and blogs... what am I complaining about???

May God give you of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth and plenty of grain and wine

"Methai", one of the many Indian elephants that make their home at the Houston Zoo, is painted in oils on an 8"x 10" pastel board in a painterly style.

I believe that the Creator of millions of different species of animals, birds, insects and fish is a God who loves variety and adores all of His creation. A careful study of the Bible convinces me that Heaven will be richer in everything, including animal life. God said it has not entered in to the heart of man what He has in store for us. I love animals, and so does the one who created them. I even dream of seeing my beloved pets that I have lost in this life.

"This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head." Ephesians 1:10

Mr and Mrs Don Key, two donkeys in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

A very pregnant Mrs Don Key and her very excited "husband" met me at the fence when I tried to capture a few photos. Although I'd like think they were excited to see me, I think they were both looking for a special treat- like an apple or a sweet carrot!

Mr and Mrs Don Key are painted in oils on a 16 x 20 inch canvas- ready to frame. $125.00 plus $15.00 shipping and insurance inside the USA.

Matthew 1: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel, "Which means God with us." (NIV)

Tatanka, a Bison Portrait in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

Tatanka, means Bison in the Native American Indian language.
This big guy seems to be standing his ground, maybe chasing away rival males from his harem. My husband, younger son, and I traveled to the Midwestern states a few years back. A bison similar to this one decided to run a little on the main road- in the state park traffic. Thankfully, everyone knew to stop driving until he made up his mind where he wanted to go!

Tatanka is painted on an 8" x 8" x 0.50" stretched canvas, with all sides painted in a dark hue- making it easy to hang him unframed, or placed in your favorite frame.Prices are listed on my photo listing- on this blog or please visit my website @ sandracutrer.com for more information.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makes me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8.

Prima Donna, a Siamese cat portrait by Sandra R Cutrer

Prima Donna, or "First Lady"
If you watch a cats and dogs, especially, you can learn a lot about how life should be. They don't worry about living- or dying- just being alive for the moment is all they know. I've had many dogs and cats in my life, and each one had their own special place in my heart and in this world; each being  unique in so many fascinating ways!. Animals are full of love, giving those they love their all.

Whether you are a cat lover, dog lover, or both, animals are God's precious creatures. We should be kind to all, and appreciate each one's gift to mankind.

Prima Donna is painted on a 12" x 12" x 1" gallery wrapped canvas- all sides painted a dark hue, so there is no need to frame.

I love taking commissions, and have done several through accepting online photos of the animals. Please contact me with any questions about purchasing this piece, or having your own loving pet portrait created in oils! I will work with you on prices, and offer a layaway plan just right for you.

Nebit, a Leopard Portrait in oils by Sandra R Cutrer

Nebit, a variant of the Egyptian word for leopard. A close-up and personal portrait of one of the most powerful wild cats. Leopards are loners, not belonging to a pride, pack, or family of its own kind. I think it is amazing that these cats can carry their prey- three times heavier than themselves- up a tree so others, like lions and hyenas don't steal it from them!

I love painting wild life portraits, and showing the details of each one's uniqueness. I hope you'll enjoy the extra photos- showing how I did my layers of oil paint to create Nebit!

Painted on a professional artist board, 9" x 12", ready for framing. So much detail, so realistic, this painting would look great in any room! For pricing, please scroll my blog's main page photos.

I love taking commissions. Please contact me at sandrasart777@aol.com
