Three Horses, a Native American portrait in oils

In the process of creating an oil painting of this amazing photograph of Edward S. Curtis' Native American chief, "Three Horses". I am still not sure of the correct tribe he belonged to, but continue to research him.

This work is being painted in oils on a 16" x 20" artist hardboard, smooth surface.

I don't try to paint many native Americans because it is truly an overwhelming emotional experience for me. I tend to take too much time allowing my mind to wander on their lives, and even their deaths. His eyes speak to me, as most eyes (of humans or animals) usually do. I have already chosen the title, "When Tears Won't Do". That title tells of so much sadness, no words or tears will do.

Stay tuned for the final work.
