Three Horses, a Native American portrait in oils

In the process of creating an oil painting of this amazing photograph of Edward S. Curtis' Native American chief, "Three Horses". I am still not sure of the correct tribe he belonged to, but continue to research him.

This work is being painted in oils on a 16" x 20" artist hardboard, smooth surface.

I don't try to paint many native Americans because it is truly an overwhelming emotional experience for me. I tend to take too much time allowing my mind to wander on their lives, and even their deaths. His eyes speak to me, as most eyes (of humans or animals) usually do. I have already chosen the title, "When Tears Won't Do". That title tells of so much sadness, no words or tears will do.

Stay tuned for the final work.

Advantages of Being an Artist!

Wow, there are so many advantages of being an artist! Not only do we get to create things from our hearts, but we have an open door to meeting so many interesting and talented people who understand our love, passion, and sometimes struggles of being right-brained!

I recently wrote a newsletter about my husband and I traveling to the Llano,Texas area, meeting a super talented western artist,Jack Moss.We were actually staying in beautiful Marble Falls, and saved their old downtown area for our last day of vacation. We were overjoyed to walk into a beautiful art center ( recently beautifully remodeled) named, "Highland Arts Guild", and meet some of their very talented (and super friendly) artist. Their work is displayed in an easy to view set-up, making it fun to take a second and even a third look! I can't express how talented these Texas artist are! My husband and I enjoyed talking to several of the ladies painting that day, and I regret not taking photos of some of the work on display. If you are interested in seeing their work, please copy and paste the website address I have included at the very bottom of this page, and see just what I've been talking about!

I am excited that cooler days are on the way, and hoping the holidays will come with cool weather as well! I will never forget our first Christmas after moving to southeast Texas, since it snowed several inches, but we were in Louisiana! We got home to Texas on Christmas morning at 2:00 AM to enjoy the beauty (and cold) with our small granddaughters!

Please visit my website soon for some new art pieces, like this one titled, "Chick Magnet"

And, if I don't post before the holidays, I'd like to wish you and yours a very blessed Thanksgiving and a truly MERRY Christmas!!!

Michael J, fox, original oil painting

"Michael J", an original oil painting of a fox on a small 6" x 6" x 1.5"(deep) wrapped canvas- no frame needed. All sides are painted a dark hue, and he comes shipped with hooks and wire, so he is ready to hang in your favorite room or office!
Isn't he cute (almost as cute as the human Michael J)?

Foxes are so smart! Yes, I'm aware a lot of people don't care for their "sneaky" ways. Still, you have to give them credit for being survivors among so many larger competitors in the wild. As they say, "Dynamite comes in small packages!" They are quick witted, fast on their feet, and intelligent enough to know when to "move on" if the need arises!

Years ago, my husband and I were privileged to be in the right place at the right time. A beautiful young fox came running out of a small wooded area (in the mist construction and the destruction of surrounding trees), chasing a brightly colored butterfly. We stopped our car, and watched in awe as he chased it and jumped into the air, oblivious to us and the destruction around him. No worries, be happy, seemed to be his attitude. So today, No worries, be happy! No matter what you are going through, we are still so blessed to be alive and well today!

Follow Me Boys, horses, riders, beach scene, dog

" Follow Me Boys!" Magnificent horses, riders, a great dog, and a strip of secluded beach. How much better can it get?
I took reference photos at our nearby beach- Surfside in south Texas. Using a favorite shot, I painted this relaxing scene in oils on an 11" x 14" stretched canvas. The sides are only a half inch deep, but I have painted them in a dark hue in the case you'd rather not frame this painting.

What a great collectible piece of original art to hang in any room- home or office.

Please contact me if you are interested in this piece or a commissioned painting. I offer a layaway plan for nearly any budget. My prices for completed work are listed on my blog and/or website.

"Watches Over You" and "Free at Last", angels in oils, palette knives

Two of my newest palette knife works-
"Watches Over You" and "Free at Last"

Both of these pieces are painted using palette knives and small brushes for a few details. Both are painted on 11" x 14" artist panels, ready for you to frame and hang in a favorite spot for spiritual strength, remembrance of your own angel in heavenly places, or just because angels really do watch over us. Oh, to be so free as these beautiful beings!

August is a "special" month for me, as I lost a dear loved one, a child (although she was grown and a mother), she was still my little girl. I miss her, and felt inspired by her ever-presence and wonderful spirit to paint these in honor of all of our "waiting angels".

If you are interested in one or both of these paintings, please contact me through this blog.Prices are listed on my website at: sandracutrer.com, or call me at 979-236-2907 with any questions or comments. I offer a layaway plan for nearly every budget.

Rio Grande, a turkey in oils by Sandra Cutrer

"Rio Grande", an original oil painting of the very breed a Rio Grande wild turkey. I think he is a magnificent bird. A friend of mine captured him on his camera, allowing me to paint this beautiful scene. "Rio" was coming out of heavy fog, just starting to break in the southern part of Texas, where my friend has enjoyed hunting over several decades. I thought this grande bird looked to be parting a heavy curtain on his own wildlife stage, ready to show his "stuff" to any of the ladies hanging around the area.

Painted on a professional art board, 10" x 14" in quality oils. Oops, this piece SOLD!

All of my prices are listed on my blog- see photos below, or on my website @ sandracutrer.com

Thanks for looking at my art and reading my blog. I enjoy taking commissions for your own custom original art work by Sandra Cutrer! Please contact me form this blog or my website, or call the number listed below.

Max, a child's portrait in oils by Sandra Cutrer

"Max"

Isn't he the cutest cowboy! A portrait painting using a photo reference his Mom took at a party. I painted Max on a stretched 8" x 10" canvas. Max lives in Dallas with his parents and older brother, so he is truly a Texan. He loves being a Texas cowboy one day- wearing his scuffed-up boots, and wanting his own horse, to Superman the next, with his cape securely around his tiny shoulders, ready to fly to other adventures in a blessed childhood, secure and encouraged to be a child by loving family and friends. What a life!

Thanks for looking at my work, and reading my art blog. I would love to commission a painting just for you! My prices are very reasonable, and I offer a layaway plan for nearly any budget. Give me a call @ 979-236-2907 or contact me through my website- sandracutrer.com- or this blog.

Jim Carrey, Comedian I Didn't Like, Now My Friend- sort of.

 Jim Carrey Arts
 http://www.jimcarreyonline.com/recent/news.php?id=1690

"All there will ever be is what's happening here. Decisions we make in this moment are based in either love or fear. So many of us choose our path out of fear, disguised as practicality." (Jim Carrey)

Esoterica: Growing up in our house, we would see some early original lithographic drawings hanging in the hallway near our bedrooms -- fast, loose sketches filled with casual élan. One in particular is of a little girl in knee socks. She's drawn twice on the same page -- a quick exercise, and then a second sketch -- a second chance at crafty effortlessness. In the lower right hand corner is a small, hand-lettered bit of text. It reads: "Love something? Serve it." And underneath is my Dad's signature.

"How will you serve the world? What do they need that you can provide? The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is." (Jim Carrey)

I just recently found out that Jim Carrey is an artist- of Fine Arts, not just comedy. I know many people love him, rant and rave on and on about his comic abilities. I mean, geez, the man is a millionaire several times over from his movies alone- right? But, to me (another person who loves to make people LOL) he is sometimes, well... obnoxious! But, when I found out he picks up brushes, paints, canvases, not to mention  creating sculptures (and, no I personally don't really care for a lot of his work), he is a fellow artist, a friend- well, sort of! We artist should stick up for one another. We have a reputation for being sort "weird, strange", or even "off". I've heard the words describing artist as,"out-there, loners, different". So, why not stick together and support one another? Sadly, I have encountered other artist who don't want to support other artist. I have also seen these people, although talented beyond words, ostracized and reaping some of their  sown seeds. Let's have fun, share, laugh, throw away jealousy and envy... the trip called life is extremely short!

Thanks Jim, for your art.

We should all take advantage of the possibility, availability and responsibility to create, whether  some people like us or not, just do it as our reasonable service!

Jake, a baby's portrait in oils by Sandra Cutrer

Aren't these some of the cutest chubby-cheeks? I could just get a ton of sugary-kisses off of them if I could only get to see him in person! He happens to me my fourth cousin, and thanks to social media (FACEBOOK), I was able to "see" him. Without FB, I probably would have never gotten to know his Mom, or any of my other cousins in this wonderful family. When she posted this photo I had to paint it. Getting permission was easy, as his Mom so graciously allowed it. It has been awhile since I painted a person's portrait, as I mainly focus on animals. I am thrilled that I received a lot of positive feedback from FB admirers. He was a lot of fun to paint, and because of him, I hope to paint more baby portraits soon!

Blessings for a wonderful month of June, and many thanks for reading my blog.

Mo Vision, a show donkey in oils

"Mo Vision", a gelding show donkey I photographed at The Houston Texas Rodeo. I was thrilled to meet Mo Vision, and Ida Claire, along with their owner, Professor Jayne Zajicek.  Don't you just adore his brightly colored slinky suit (cover) that keeps his mane all sleek and ready-to-show, along with being kept clean from any  hay-rolling he may want to do, before bringing him before the judges. I think his name fits him well, and I wish them all the best!

Some fun facts about donkeys:

A male donkey and a female horse may give birth to a mule; a male horse and female donkey make a hinny.

China has the largest number of donkeys with about 11 million of the world’s 41 million.

Robert Louis Stevenson, in his Travels With A Donkey, reported that the correct word to encourage a donkey to move faster is 'Proot!’

There are about 800 donkeys working on British beaches, with more than 200 licensed in Blackpool.

Since 2005, donkeys in Britain have been required to have a passport.

The phrase ‘donkey’s years’ to mean a long time began as a pun on the length of donkey ears.

The correct collective noun for groups of donkeys are a drove, herd or pace of donkeys.

I hope you've enjoyed reading my blog. Please scroll through my price list and photos of all of my pieces for sell. I'd love to ship Mo Vision to you, or create a special commissioned piece of your favorite subject.

Secrets Among the Flowers butterfly in oils artist board

"Secrets Among the Flowers" , a female Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly, painted in oils on a 9" x 12" artist board, ready to ship for you to enjoy her brilliant colors- and just pure beauty- for many years to come!

I have never met a butterfly that did not make me smile! Isn't this one truly spectacular with its lovely blues and blacks, enjoying spring among the new blooms? She may be pollinating, but I like to think she is actually laying her eggs (larvae) underneath the new leaves for future butterflies just as lovely as their mother!

Great Dane portrait in ols by Sandra Cutrer

A Great Dane portrait in oils on a small 6" x 6" x 1.5" wrapped canvas. Prices are listed on my photo post or on my web site @ sandracutrer.com. I really enjoy painting animals, and especially people's beloved pets. Contact me for your own personal commissioned piece. A forever gift to yourself, or another pet lover in your life!

A few fun facts about Great Danes:

  •  Size: The weight of Great Danes range from 100 - 120 pounds
  •  Size: The height OF Great Danes ranges from 28 - 32 inches, up to the shoulder
  •  Alternative Names of Great Danes and Nicknames: German Mastiff or Danish Hound
  •  Coat and colors of Great Danes: The coat is normally short, sleek and dense and comes in a range of
  • Origin of the breed: Great Danes originated in Germany, not Denmark as the name suggests, and were originally bred as hunting dogs. Their quarry was large game such as wild boar
  • colors including brindle, fawn, blue, black or harlequin.
I think Great Dane's are totally beautiful. Although they are large, they think they are lap dogs, and adore attention. Such a sweet, friendly breed for having indoors.

If you are lucky enough to have a dog for a pet, take them for a long walk while the weather is still amazing- or at least it is here in southeast,Texas.

Blessings for a great weekend,

Hey, May Called a macaw original oil painting by Sandra R Cutrer

"Hey, May Called!", a macaw original oil painting by Sandra R Cutrer on a 9" x 12" canvas board, ready to hang in your favorite frame.

There was no option but to use bright oils for this lovely "eye-popping" Macaw portrait. Isn't he gorgeous to look at! I love these birds, and used a photograph I took at the wonderful Audubon Zoo, located in historical  New Orleans, Louisiana.
I enjoy traveling and taking reference photos at many zoos around the magnificent USA! What a joy to see such beautiful creatures that I may never get the opportunity to see in their true native habitats. Although in captivity, many are actually safer in zoos, that are trying to give them as much of a natural setting as if they were living in their native lands. Many are sadly on the endangered list, and my prayers and hopes are that one day- soon- there will be no more endangered list of any animals, so our future generations can enjoy all of the beauty and diversity that God intended!
Please scroll down my list of art works for sell, prices should be listed including shipping and insurance. Or, visit my web site @ sandracutrer.com. Feel free to contact me with any questions or request for an original oil painting custom made just for you, or one of those listed for sell.

Lucky Peter, a rabbit in colorful oils by Sandra Cutrer

"Lucky Peter" is feeling great with his new  fun-colors! He feels pretty lucky to be painted on a canvas instead of being in a stew pot or his foot hanging on a key chain-ugh! This piqued my interest about WHY people carried a rabbit's foot for many years, and I think, still do! I found this article interesting and have edited it for a shortened version. Thanks for looking at my blog and my art work. Enjoy!

"In Europe, the tradition of carrying the foot of a rabbit probably stems from ancient totemic beliefs that humans descended from animals, and particular tribes had their origins in specific species. A tribe worshiped its animal ancestor, and carried parts of that animal as protective totems.
The Celts, by around 600 B.C., are known to have associated rabbits with good fortune- the whole rabbit, not just the foot. According to Celtic folklore, the fact that rabbits lived in burrows deep underground meant that they were in direct communication with the gods and spirits of the underworld.
From here, it isn’t clear whether this contributed to the very modern practice of the lucky rabbit’s foot that popped up around the turn of the twentieth century in America. These Celtic beliefs did evolve somewhat, carrying over into certain other European cultures. For instance, in the 16th century, there is a work by Reginald Scot that mentions that a good way to ease the pain of arthritis was to carry around a rabbit’s foot.

It’s possible this was then blended with aspects of African American folk magic.  Or, it may be that the specific lucky rabbit’s foot tradition simply came from traditions in the African folk magic that were unrelated to the European traditions associated with the rabbit.  We just don’t have the hard documented evidence to be able to discern the exact lineage.  But, in either case, it is generally thought that African folk  magic played a role in the modern tradition, and possibly is the most direct ancestor to the superstition.
In hoodoo (note: not voodoo), which was an American mash-up of African folk spirituality and certain European traditions,  a rabbit’s foot came to be a common item used for various things.  Probably from this, around the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, rabbit’s feet started being associated among the wider populace more exclusively with luck  Not just any foot would do, however." Oh, my!

Another reason to love technology and all of the fun stuff we can Google!

OOPS,"Lucky Peter" is SOLD! I would love to create a special rabbit painting just for you. Please contact me from this website, blog, or call the number listed below for more information!

Cream and Sugar, two young calves in oils on canvas by Sandra Cutrer

"Cream and Sugar", two young calves in tall grass. Painted on an 8" x 10" x 1.5" wrapped canvas, no need to frame.
My husband and I love to travel, and have enjoyed many trips to the lovely Texas Hill Country, where we spotted these two frisky little ones, having a fun time in the tall grasses. No need to worry, their Mom was nearby keeping an eye out in case their frolicking went a little too far from her idea of parental boundaries.

Pathway to Peace, landscape oil painting by Sandra Cutrer

"Pathway to Peace", an original oil painting by Sandra Cutrer, on an 11" x 14" stretched canvas, ready for your favorite frame and spot. This one easily creates calmness and a sense of serenity, I think. I love how the path winds up the mountain closely beside the trees, and seems to disappear. "What great site is beyond this simple path?" seems to be what it is saying. Like life itself, what seems to be the best we can see, can easily change once we climb our mountain and get to the other side!

Biltmore Chickens, an original oil painting by Sandra Cutrer

"Biltmore Chickens", an original oil painting by Sandra Cutrer

I took my reference photos at the amazing and surreal Biltmore Estate, located in Asheville, North Carolina. My husband and I have taken many trips to visit and dine at this wonderful estate, which now has a farm area located in the back for kids of all ages. This sweet hen was just curious about what the rooster had found to eat (okay, maybe she wanted him to share with her), but he was having none-of-it, the old sassy thing!

This one is painted on a 16" x 20" stretched canvas, ready to frame and hang in your favorite spot!

Thank you for reading my blog and looking at my work. I love taking commissions, making a painting especially for you at reasonable prices- any size. I also offer a layaway plan for any budget!

Rising From Ashes, a buffalo in oils, original by Sandra Cutrer

"Rising From Ashes", a 12" x 12" x 1.5" wrapped canvas (all sides painted a dark hue, so no need to frame).

Oops! This piece SOLD! You missed being able to purchase "Rising From the Ashes" , but I would love to paint one especially for you. Please contact me through this blog, or on my website, or call me at 979-236-2907, and we can work together on making a special original oil painting just for you!

I painted this big fella from some photographs I took a few years back. My husband and I had noticed a field of buffalo (or bison) on our way to Galveston,Texas on numerous occasions. I decided to take my camera along and stop for photographs on one such trip. We had to pull into the private drive (all true photographers and artist take chances) in order to get photos that day, as they had been moved to a more contained area. Almost immediately one of the owners came flying down the long gravel drive-way in her huge pick-up truck to see what we were up to. I apologized for our invasion, and explained that I wanted to take a few photos of her buffalo, as I am an artist and want to paint them. She was kind and allowed me to take a few photos, but not stay too long as they were getting nervous about strangers being that near to their young calves. This one was a male who was giving me a look of curiousness and (I really thought) a warning of,  "Don't even think about coming closer, or I will hop over that fence like a bird!". We didn't stay long, and on our last ride that way we were sad to see that all of the beautiful buffaloes were gone.

When I see a buffalo, I never cease to think of how the American Indians never killed them for pleasure, but for life. They did not waste anything from their kill, and honored the powerful beast given to them by our Creator.  Looking into their deep eyes, I see power, fear, life, death, and an honor to know their ancestors kept many of my ancestors here on earth fed so I could be a part of its greatness.

May your new year be filled with life, love, and the power to do what is right and good for all people, and our wonderful planet. It is our future generation's only home!

You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured on me.

Sable Antelope-still in progress by Sandra Cutrer Fine Artist

I haven't posted since before the holidays, and I am really trying hard to play catch-up. I've been working on four paintings at once, two for my art class, which will start back up soon, and this one along with another animal one (a buffalo) that I working on for pure pleasure. I love the bright colors of this beautiful sable Antelope. The photo was taken at the Baton Rouge,Louisiana Zoo a while back, and I am thrilled to have finally found the time to work on it again. I was actually working on it while in Alabama visiting one of our sons ( he keeps a table and place for me to paint while I am visiting him). I hope your holidays were wonderful. Ours were super busy, traveling in different directions to visit family members that are spread far and wide. Stay tuned for my finished work on this big guy, and some newer works I will ( hopefully) soon be posting.

Blessings for the New Year. I hope yours is filled to the brim with joy and answered prayers!
