I'm applying the darkest 'darks' first. Always with oils, the darkest colors are placed in the first layer. |
Here I am what I call, "Messing around". Not sure what I like and don't like yet, but going with what I feel. |

Here is a light sketch on canvas of my rooster idea.I know it is hard to see, but the lighter the sketch, the least likely pencil strokes will show through the oil paint I'll apply. |
I am so guilty of forgetting to stop when I am on a roll with my paint brush, that I sometimes forget to take photos of my first few stages! But, you can see here that I have yet to put in the background in the "sky" area, and then add the bright blues to the tail feathers. I also made some tweaks to the area around the rooster, since I was not happy with having too much darkness near his head. I'm enjoying painting inside our lovely covered patio since this cooler weather has decided to finally make its entrance, rather late this year I might add. I am hoping it last. One never knows in south Texas what the weather will decide to do! |
I am pretty pleased with these eye-catching bright and cheerful colors on this rooster painting.I hope you've enjoyed reading my post, and browsing my art for sale. Please come back soon.I have another rooster painting I'm working on right now. I think this autumn weather has me in the mood for gorgeous colors! Be blessed, Sandra Cutrer, Fine Art |
Sketching the tiger on a 16" x 20" x 1.5" (deep) gallery wrapped canvas. All sides will be painted, so no need for a frame! |
The eyes are my favorite thing to paint. They bring life to God's creation. |
Coming along with the first layers. LSU colors are purple and gold. |
I've worked more on the back ground, and a little more detail.I always intend to paint looser, but something always makes me put in those details! I sure hope you will come back soon to see the finished painting! I've attached a few photos. Louisiana State University recently lost their beloved Mascot, "Mike the Tiger" VI, to cancer. |
He was so grand, |
As you can see, I have the Macaw sketched, and a little work going on in the background. |
I've added a little of the brilliant colors to his glorious head! I am still playing with the back ground. |
I've started in on the blues of his feathers- how beautiful these birds are- WOW! |
I'm using my own photo references.I love taking photos, mostly at zoos when my hubby and I get to travel. We have children scattered all over, so we are on the road quite often. We usually take along our grand-cat, Miss MaLee. You can see a photo of her at the end of this post. |
I'm still not thrilled with the background, but I will dabble a bit more on that a little later... MaLee, doing a little critiquing for me. We hope you'll come back and see the finished product!!! |
Starting with a lose sketch. I plan to add flag stripes to the background. |
Working on the lay-in of the eagle. Isn't he grand? I love birds, and am especially proud of the American Eagle. I'd love to touch one. Maybe I can add that to my bucket list!!! |

I am proud of the way this great bird has turned out! I sure hope you like it as well. Please leave any comments! |
A side view of the 1.5" deep wrapped canvas side.Ready to hang without a frame! |
Oils on a 12" x 24" x 1.5" (deep) stretched and wrapped canvas. Placing the wolves in a rocky crevice. Right now, I am not sure if I want a foggy affect, or a sunset with loads of color... |
As you can see, I've decided to go toward the colorful sunset. |
Almost completed. Still work to be done on the wolf that is standing. |
