Still Life Oil Painting of flowers in an old blue Mason Jar, Ceramic bird, by Sandra Cutrer Fine Art

My husband and I enjoy "antique"shopping. Of course, at our age, we tend to look at most things not being antiques, but more like "vintage" items... We don't usually buy much when we go (these folks need to come by my house and buy some things from me!), but I was able to find an old blue Mason jar, with the original metal lid, and milky glass insert, at a great price while we were in a small town in Northeast Texas. I added a bunch of Hydrangeas, as well as my adorable ceramic bird (green- my favorite color). The flowers have added texture. Please click on the link next to the photo, to go directly to my Etsy Shop in order to view a couple of close-ups of this painting.

I was curious about whether a Mason jar, and a Ball jar were the same. Thanks to Wikipedia, they were made by the same company. A neat fact!

Thanks for reading my blog.

Child's Play by Sandra Cutrer Fine Art

I don't call myself a portrait painter, but there are times that I really enjoy painting children. I love seeing the mischief in their eyes, and the wheels of play turning over in their minds. It does my heart good to see them pretending, making up stories, enjoying a book, toy, or playing outside, verses wearing their thumbs out on an I-pad, or cellphone...

A drawing in pastel pencils helps me to prepare for redrawing on canvas, and painting in oils.

Building up layers of oil paint.

Applying the face coloring.
The finished painting. This one makes me smile!!!

Wisdom of the Owl by Sandra Cutrer Fine Art

 Wisdom of the Owl

I found it interesting that not all cultures connect owls with wisdom.  For many African cultures, the owl is nothing but evil, while early European cultures viewed the owl as rather foolish!

It is noted that early Christian texts used the owl as a metaphor for Jesus, who appeared in the darkness of sin and showed humans the way to salvation.

Whatever people have concocted over the centuries, I think owls are gorgeous creatures, mysterious, regal, and powerful members of the bird species. I can't imagine a world without these big-eyed beauties!

A fun fact about owls; a group of owls is called a parliament.

Although this painting is sold, I love taking custom orders. I also offer high quality prints on canvas. Please contact me through this blog, or from my Etsy Shop by clicking the link below:

God, Please forgive us, and bless America by Sandra Cutrer Fine Art

God, Please forgive us, and bless America.

Okay, so we are still a VERY, VERY blessed country. But, doesn't it make you the least little bit sad that America isn't the same America you grew-up knowing? I mean, especially if you are in my baby-boomer age group.

I recall so vividly, as a small child,  about the only fear I had was of my mother calling me to come home, and my not hearing her because I was a little too far away on my bicycle. Or, of not having enough money from my younger brother and I returning cast-off empty soda bottles for candy money, and not having enough to buy two Hershey bars at once.

I remember one of the highlights of our lives, as a family, were going on summer vacations, and attending my brother's Little League baseball games, at our neighborhood ball park.

In my wildest dreams, nor ever would it have entered into my mind, that some crazed person, mad about politics, would enter an area around innocent people practicing for a fund-raiser ball game, kids included on the field, as well as those within walking distance, being prime targets for a bullet in the brain.

So, maybe I am stepping over the artist's blog-line here, but can one help it, when their heart is overwhelmed, praying her children, and grandchildren, can grow up in a world with love, hope, grace, and forgiveness? A world where anyone can go to a ball game, laugh, play, and have no fears of anyone coming over to hurt anybody, for any reason, because there is no sensible reason to do such a thing? I think not.

Let America return to her roots, and as Reba Mac Entire sings, "The only answer is, We give this world back to God"

Blessings,

Dog Days by Sandra Cutrer Fine Art

Mrs Wise-One  tells us, no one is never too old to learn, especially about something they have heard about for years, (as in MANY YEARS) but never quite "got it".

I was wondering what,"The Dog Days of Summer" really means, and how that idiom came about. So, I've googled it to see.

This is what I found:

The sultry part of the summer, supposed to occur during the period that Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun: now often reckoned from July 3 to August 11. 2. a period marked by lethargy, inactivity, or indolence. Origin of dog days. Latin.
I found that interesting. But, honestly, I'd rather be looking at some cute dogs, than dealing with high-heat, so take a look at one of my "dog days"... as in applying layers of oils on canvas, creating a commissioned painting of two adorable Yorkie's. One is very old, and in his prime, and the other is still a young, high energy ball of fun in a fur coat.

This is a commissioned painting, but I love taking custom orders. Please contact me through this blog, or from my Etsy Shop. Thanks for reading my blog, and looking at my work.
